Treatment

Doctors have not yet agreed on a standard treatment procedure for mesothelioma. Some patients respond very well to treatment and achieve full remission of their cancer. However, different patients respond differently to treatments. As a result, much research is being conducted on what factors can be used to determine which treatment methods are best for different types of patients. As a result, it is important to get opinions from multiple doctors before deciding what course of treatment to pursue.

Standard Treatments

Surgery

Surgery is a controversial mesothelioma treatment option. Some mesothelioma surgeries are radical and require long recovery times, so they are not the best choice for every patient. However, some patients do receive a significant survival benefit from radical mesothelioma surgery, so it is important to get opinions on several doctors about your surgery options.

There are three main types of mesothelioma surgery:

  • Extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP): Intends to remove all visible tumor tissue (complete macroscopic resection). This includes the affected lung, the lining of the lungs (pleura), the diaphragm, and part of the lining of the heart (pericardium). An EPP can slow down the mesothelioma and result in long-term survival, but it is a radical surgery with a long recovery period.
  • Pleurectomy/ decortication (P/D): The goal of a P/D procedure is to remove as much of the mesothelioma tumor as possible while leaving the lung in place. This surgery can slow cancer growth and relieve pressure and pain caused by the tumor. P/D is a radical surgery, but requires shorter recovery times than EPP does.
  • Debulking: The least extreme mesothelioma surgery is performed with the intention of relieving the patient's symptoms, such as chest pain and trouble breathing. Debulking does not remove the whole tumor, but it is palliative and can extend the life of a patient due to improved lung function.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a common mesothelioma treatment because it can be administered without surgery. The current standard in mesothelioma treatment is Pemetrexed (Alimta) with Cisplatin. However, many other chemotherapy drugs are in testing and may prove to be more effective than the current standard. Chemotherapy often comes with side effects such as nausea and hair loss, but most cancer centers work with chemotherapy patients to manage their symptoms with medication and diet.

Radiation

Radiation is not as common for mesothelioma treatment because standard radiation procedures can damage the patient's lungs. However, a new radiation technique called Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) allows for much more precise application of the radiation, and tests in mesothelioma patients are encouraging.

Alternative Therapies

Alternative therapies are practices that are used to support mesothelioma treatment but have not been proven to cure or treat mesothelioma. You should ask your doctor before using any alternative therapy, because they may interfere with your medical treatment.

If your doctor says the alternative treatments you are considering are safe, then they may be worth a try. Some cancer patients say that practices such as yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and massage help them manage their stress and stay positive. Being mentally prepared to fight is an important part of beating mesothelioma, and you may find that supporting your medical treatment with alternative therapies helps keep you strong.
